Pilot Curbside Food Waste Program

The City of New Albany is seeking a vendor to collect, haul, and tip food scraps and compostable products from up to 150 households in a weekly, curbside collection service.

Will the 150 participating households be pre-selected by the City, or will we be expected to conduct recruitment and signups?

City staff will conduct recruitment for signups.

Yes, the city will provide the list of participating addresses prior to the start date.

When city staff conducted a survey in 2024, most respondents indicated they would prefer the collection day to be the same day as their trash and recycling pick-up day, which is Thursday for the city of New Albany residents.

The vendor is responsible for the initial distribution of the collection buckets and liners to the 150 households in the pilot program.

Please include this information in your proposal. It is our understanding that this could vary depending on where the vendor hauls the scraps and products.  The city will educate the participants on what will be accepted beyond food scraps.

Please include this information in your proposal. The city will educate the participants on the contractors required contamination threshold and/or penalty policy for high-contamination bins.

  1. Weekly and monthly totals provided to the city of New Albany on amount of food waste collected;
  2. Weekly and monthly totals provided to the city of New Albany on the number of hours spent on collecting the food waste;
  3. Weekly and monthly totals on home participation rate; and
  4. Weekly and monthly information as it relates to any home that was not collect from due any potential issue that may occur. For example: “Driver did not pick up at 99 W Main Street due to non-compostable materials mixed in with food waste”.
