About the Project

In an effort to ease congestion in the heart of town and prepare for future growth, the City of New Albany has acquired all of the land necessary to construct an extension of Market Street northeast of the Village Center to connect with Dublin-Granville Road and US 62.

As you travel east on Market Street leaving the Village Center, what is currently a dead end at Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road will become a roundabout. We plan to extend Market Street northeast from that future roundabout to connect with Dublin-Granville Road. Third Street between Dublin-Granville Road and US-62 will also be reconstructed to provide a seamless flow of traffic from the new Market Street extension to US-62.

Our goal with this extension is to relieve current traffic congestion in the Village Center and accommodate future increases in traffic volume.

Thanks to land donations from the New Albany Company, the Market Street extension will feature a beautiful new water feature with wetland plantings. It will also include a new scenic overlook that will be part of a connection to Rose Run Phase II.

Construction began in late fall 2024 and is expected to be substantially complete by November 2025. Work on the project will be performed in a manner to limit traffic impacts as much as possible.

  • Start tree clearing, begin limited driveway relocations on Third St, and install tree protection as required.
  • Install underground electric duct bank along SR-605 for future overhead electric relocations (minimal traffic impacts, occasional flagging restricted to 9 AM to 3 PM).
  • Install on-street parking (pavement widening) north side of US-62 between Miller Ave and Infinite Church (minimal traffic impacts, some shifting of lanes a foot or two to the south with temporary striping). Work will largely occur outside of pavement.
  • Install on-street parking (pavement widening) south side of US-62 between Miller Ave and Infinite Church (minimal traffic impacts, some shifting of lanes a foot or two to the north with temporary striping). Work will largely occur outside of pavement.

5/30/25 - 8/17/25
  • Finish outstanding driveway relocation work at NAUMC/NWES (minimal to no traffic impacts).
  • Construct SR-605/Market St roundabout under full closure. More information regarding the detour and duration of closure will be shared at a later date. This work is being strategically planned to minimize impacts to NAPLS by performing the work during summer recess.
  • Lower intersection of Market St Extension, Dublin-Granville Rd (AKA Granville St), and Third St. More information regarding the detour and duration of closure will be shared at a later date. This work is being strategically planned to minimize impacts to NAPLS by performing the work during summer recess.

Description of Work

Parts 1-3

Part 1 involves constructing a roundabout at Market Street and Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road, requiring utility work starting in mid-February and continuing intermittently until the school year ends. Once schools are on summer break, Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road will fully close until August 17, 2025, to expedite construction.

Part 2 of the project, between SR-605 and Dublin-Granville Road, began fall 2024 and is progressing steadily, with completion expected by late summer 2025 and final completion by spring 2026.

Part 3 focuses on reconfiguring the Main Street and Third Street intersection to prioritize Third Street as the primary route to US-62, with minor construction beginning in February, including new parking spaces, curbing, and a shared-use path. More significant work on US-62 is planned for fall 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where will the extension be built?

As you travel east on Market Street leaving the Village Center, what is currently a dead end at Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road will become a roundabout. We plan to extend Market Street northeast from that future roundabout to connect with Dublin-Granville Road. and US-62 via Third Street. Click here for a PDF of the map above.

Why is the project necessary?

Our goal with this project is relieve traffic congestion within the Village Center and to accommodate future increases in traffic volume as the region continues to develop.

The most significant source of traffic congestion in the Village Center is the intersection of Main Street and High Street, but the buildings surrounding this intersection prevent us from being able to widen the roads or add lanes. By extending Market Street, we expect to re-direct about 20% of drivers away from Main Street and High Street and provide a non-stop travel path around the heart of the village center.  The Market Street extension will provide more convenient access to and from State Route 161 along Main Street.

How will Third Street be affected by the project?

The project includes reconfiguring the intersection of Main Street and Third Street in a way that Third Street will become the more prominent travel path to and from US-62.

Will there be any retail or housing options along this extension?

The City of New Albany does not have any current applications for development, but the project will set up the area for future growth.

How much land was acquired for the project?

Road right of way in the amount of 3.23 acres was needed to support this project. The needed right of way was dedicated to the City of New Albany at no cost by the property owners.

How much will the project cost?

We estimate the total cost of the project will be close to $14 million. The City received funding support from the Ohio Public Works Commission in the form of a $244,000 grant and $756,000 loan for the project. The remaining project cost will be funded from the City’s capital improvement fund.

What is the timeline for the project?

Construction began in late fall 2024 and is expected to last roughly 18-24 months. Work on the project will be performed in a manner to limit traffic impacts as much as possible.

How can I stay updated?

You can stay updated with the project by following the City of New Albany’s social media accounts and by subscribing to our weekly Connects email at newalbanyohio.org/subscribe. We will also include updates on this page and in future City Council mailed letters to residents.
