Amgen, a global biotechnology leader, has announced the largest life sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturing expansion in Ohio history with plans to grow its operations in New Albany. The company has committed to investing at least $822 million in the project, while creating 350 new jobs and retaining 400 existing positions. The company will grow its footprint by building a new facility next to its existing biomanufacturing site on land it already owns. The project includes $614 million in building construction and $208 million in machinery and equipment, further solidifying the Columbus Region as a premier destination for life sciences investment. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.
“Our decision to expand in the Columbus Region reflects the area’s robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and supportive business environment,” said Sandra Rodriguez-Toledo, vice president of site operations for Amgen. “We are committed to being a long-term partner in this community and look forward to advancing our mission of serving patients worldwide from our New Albany facilities.”
With this expansion, Amgen continues to deepen its investment in the Columbus Region. The company originally announced its entry into Ohio in 2021, committing over $400 million to build a 270,000-square-foot biomanufacturing facility that became operational in early 2024. Amgen’s continued growth in New Albany highlights the region’s ability to attract and support world-class biotech and biopharmaceutical operations.
“We’re excited that Amgen is once again expanding here in Ohio,” said Lt. Governor Jim Tressel. “Their investment shows that Ohio is the place to be thanks to our state’s skilled workforce and commitment to innovation. New investments mean new opportunities for more Ohioans.”
Amgen’s decision to expand in the Columbus Region aligns with Ohio’s growing prominence as a national leader in biotech and life sciences. The state’s strong business climate, deep talent pool, and commitment to fostering innovation continue to attract top-tier companies in the industry.
“Amgen has been an outstanding corporate partner, and their expansion is a testament to the strong relationship they’ve built with the New Albany community,” said New Albany Mayor Sloan Spalding. “Their investment brings new, high-quality jobs to our residents and helps diversify our economy, strengthening New Albany’s position as a hub for innovation.”
“Amgen’s substantial investment reinforces Ohio’s position as a powerhouse for biotech and life sciences,” said J.P. Nauseef, President and CEO of JobsOhio. “Ohio is home to a rapidly growing biomanufacturing sector, and this expansion showcases the confidence that global companies have in our workforce, infrastructure, and commitment to innovation.”
