Fire Prevention Week: “Charge Into Fire Safety”

This year’s Fire Prevention Week (October 5-11, 2025) theme, Charge Into Fire Safety,” focuses on staying safe when using battery-powered devices — a timely reminder in today’s technology-driven world. From phones and laptops to power tools, lithium-ion batteries are part of our daily lives. However, when they are damaged, used improperly, or charged incorrectly, they can pose serious fire risks.

Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), encourages everyone to take proactive steps to prevent fires and protect their homes, families, and workplaces. This year’s campaign highlights the importance of understanding how to safely use, charge, and store devices powered by lithium-ion batteries.

🔋 Why “Charge Into Fire Safety” Matters

As battery-powered devices become more common, it’s important to know how to reduce risks:

  • Use the right charger — Only use chargers and power cords designed for your device.
  • Avoid charging near flammable materials — Never charge electronics on beds, couches, or under pillows.
  • Unplug after charging — Prevent overheating by disconnecting once the device is fully charged.
  • Watch for warning signs — Swelling, excessive heat, or strange smells could indicate battery failure.
  • Store batteries safely — Keep them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight or heat sources.
  • Recycle properly — Never throw batteries in the trash; check with local recycling programs for proper disposal.

🔥 Fire Safety Basics Still Save Lives

Even as technology changes, the fundamentals of fire prevention remain the same:

  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month.
  • Practice a home escape plan with your family.
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn.
  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking.

If you have any questions or are looking for more tips, you can contact your local fire department for more information.
