Greg Jones

New Albany Police Chief

Greg Jones began working in New Albany as a patrol officer in 1989. At that time, New Albany encompassed one square mile, the population was 918 residents, and there was no business park. Today, as police chief, he oversees a combined staff of more than 30 police, dispatch and support staff, serving a New Albany daytime population approaching 25,000, with 16,000 employees in the New Albany International Business Park. The New Albany Police Department also pays 100% of the costs of staffing a School Resource Officer and DARE officer on the New Albany-Plain Local School District’s campus to serve a student and staff population of nearly 6,000.

New Albany is one of Ohio’s safest communities and a reason for this low crime rate is the strong interaction between our officers, residents and businesses. Whether performing vacation house checks, teaching women’s self-defense classes, outreach through Block Watch programs and police station tours, coordinating Safety Town, conducting bicycle safety programs for children, or providing safety tips to businesses, our officers understand that strong relationships set the foundation for a safer community.

Under Greg’s leadership, the New Albany Police Department earned accreditation in 2019 from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), certifying the institution of best practices locally to meet a national standard of excellence. Obtaining accreditation was a three-year process, signifying that the department meets more than 180 different policing standards.

Greg graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene College, as well as the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety’s School of Police Staff and Command, and the Law Enforcement Foundation’s Police Executive Leadership College. He enjoys working out, outdoor activities and walking with his wife Jeni and their daughter Aiden.
