ODOT is scheduled to begin construction in July on an improvement project along State Route (SR) 161 and I-270 to accommodate future development. The proposed improvements include the following:

• Widening SR 161 between I-270 and east of the US 62 interchange
• Widening the ramp from SR 161 west to I-270 north/west

ODOT will be adding a lane in each direction of SR 161 within the existing footprint of the highway. The additional lanes are expected to be open by November 2024, and all other construction activities are scheduled to be completed by August 2025. Because construction activities at the SR 161 and US 62 interchange will include widening the SR 161 bridges over US 62, the sections of the New Albany leisure trail along US 62 will require closures during construction. The estimated duration of the closure is approximately four months to complete widening on the eastbound and westbound structures. When possible, pedestrians using the New Albany leisure trail will be moved to either side of the roadway to maintain traffic.

I-270 – New Impacts

• The Sunbury Rd. ramp to I-270 southbound will close for 60 days starting July 14. 
  • Detour: Sunbury Rd. to I-270 northbound to SR 3 to I-270 southbound.
• The Sunbury Rd. ramp to I-270 northbound will close overnight (9 p.m. – 7 a.m.) Friday, July 14.  
  • Detour: SR 161 eastbound to Little Turtle Way northbound to I-270.
• The Sunbury Rd. ramp to SR 161 westbound will close overnight (7 p.m. – 7  a.m.) Saturday, July 15. 
  • Detour: SR 161 eastbound to Little Turtle Way northbound to SR 161 westbound.

State Route 161 – New Impacts

• The SR 161 westbound ramp to I-270 southbound will have various lane restrictions starting Friday, July 14 at 9 p.m. through Monday, July 17 at 5 a.m.
• The SR 161 westbound ramp to I-270 northbound will close overnight (10 p.m. – 7 a.m.) Friday, July 14. 
  • Detour: SR 161 westbound to I-270 southbound to Hamilton Rd. to I-270 northbound.
• SR 161 westbound between Little Turtle Way and I-270 will have various lane restrictions starting Friday, July 14 at 9 p.m. through Monday, July 17 at 7 a.m.
• The SR 161 westbound ramp to I-270 southbound will close overnight (9 p.m. – 7 a.m.) Saturday, July 15. 
  • Detour: SR 161 westbound to I-270 northbound to SR 3 to I-270 southbound.
