New Albany Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Accident

The New Albany Police Department is investigating a pedestrian accident that occurred on the evening of Friday, November 8, 2024. A 78-year-old man was attempting to cross Market Street, west of US 62, when he was struck by a vehicle. He was transported to the hospital and eventually succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and has been fully cooperative with investigators. After a preliminary investigation, there is no indication that speed or impairment played a role in this incident. However, the investigation is ongoing, as NAPD strives to ensure a thorough and accurate assessment of the circumstances.

Investigating accidents of this nature is a meticulous process. It involves gathering and analyzing evidence that may be subject to judicial review in criminal or civil proceedings. These investigations take time, and we appreciate the community’s patience as our police work to uncover all relevant facts. Premature conclusions could inflict unnecessary pain on those involved, compromise potential legal processes, and undermine the integrity of NAPD’s work.

We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy and want to take this moment to provide the safety reminders below for pedestrians and drivers alike. The safety of our community is a shared responsibility. Together, we can take steps to prevent future tragedies.

Vehicle Safety

  • Be alert. Drivers should look out for pedestrians everywhere, at all times.
  • Slow down near crosswalks. Be prepared to stop when approaching a crosswalk. Drivers must remember that once a pedestrian is in the crosswalk, that pedestrian has the right of way, and the motorist must yield.

Pedestrian Safety

  • Be visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially in low-light conditions.
  • Use crosswalks. Always cross at designated crosswalks and wait for vehicles to yield before proceeding.
  • Make use of pedestrian crossing signals. The flashing lights will help alert motorists that you are about to cross the street.
  • Avoid risky behaviors. Stick to leisure trails and sidewalks whenever possible, and avoid crossing roads in unmarked areas. Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.
  • Navigate roundabouts safely. Cross only at designated crosswalks and wait for safe gaps in traffic before proceeding.
