National Prescription Drug Take Back Day – April 26, 2025

Unused medications in your home could pose a bigger risk than you think. That’s why the New Albany Police Department and Plain Township Fire Department are teaming up for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day—happening on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Plain Township Fire Department (9500 Johnstown Road).

This nationwide initiative provides an easy, anonymous way to safely dispose of old or unwanted pill and capsule medications. Please note: liquid medications and syringes will not be accepted.

“When medications sit around too long, they can end up in the wrong hands,” said Sergeant Garrett Fernander of the New Albany Police Department. “That’s dangerous for kids, teens, pets—even adults. But by participating in Drug Take Back Day, you’re helping prevent misuse, overdose, and environmental harm.”

Why Participate?

  • Prevent drug misuse: Unused medications are a leading cause of accidental poisoning and overdose.

  • Protect your family and pets: Don’t let expired prescriptions become a household hazard.

  • Support environmental health: Proper disposal helps keep pharmaceutical chemicals out of our waterways and ecosystems.

  • It’s quick and easy: Simply drop off your pills—no questions asked.

Can’t Make It?

If you’re unable to attend on April 26, there’s a secure drop box available year-round in the lobby of the New Albany Police Department. It’s another safe, convenient option to dispose of your prescription medications at any time.
