Capital Improvement Project

Bevelhymer/Walnut Roundabout and Fieldhouse

An overview and FAQs about the Bevelhymer/Walnut Roundabout and Fieldhouse

About the Project

At its April 15 meeting, New Albany City Council approved critical funding for utility improvements that will support two highly anticipated community projects: the Bevelhymer Road and Walnut Street Roundabout Improvement Project and the new fieldhouse at Bevelhymer Park.

This vital project is a key investment in the city’s future, aimed at accommodating long-term growth and development. The intersection is a critical connection point for increasing traffic, especially with the upcoming Community Fieldhouse and the ongoing expansion of the New Albany International Business Park.

Watch our video as City Engineer Justin Wilkinson shares details about the project, and stay tuned to the City’s social media—we’ll be sharing traffic impact info in the coming weeks.

Construction of the new roundabout at Walnut Street and Bevelhymer Road is progressing smoothly and remains on schedule for completion in December. While the roundabout will be open to traffic at that point, some work will remain for the spring such as landscaping and leisure trail paving.

Since work began in early September, crews have made steady progress on this important safety and traffic flow improvement. The intersection remains closed during construction, with access maintained for residents within the work zone. A temporary road continues to allow eastbound Walnut Street traffic to turn north onto Bevelhymer Road, ensuring convenient access to Bevelhymer Park from SR-605.

We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as this project nears the finish line. Once complete, the new roundabout will enhance safety and efficiency for everyone traveling through this busy area.

Project Highlights

This project is more than just a roundabout.

Key elements include:

  • Installation of ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps for increased accessibility.

  • New water service for the future Community Fieldhouse.

  • Elimination of dead ends on existing waterlines to improve water quality and flow.

  • Widening of Bevelhymer Road from the Public Service Complex to Millbrook Farm Drive to better accommodate traffic.

  • Enhanced landscaping and streetscape to beautify the area.

  • New leisure trail connections along Bevelhymer Road and Walnut Street to expand the city’s trail network for cyclists and pedestrians.

Investment

Funded through the City's 2025 Capital Improvement Budget

These utility enhancements will pave the way for improved community access and functionality. The new roundabout is designed to ease congestion and increase safety at a high-traffic intersection that serves Bevelhymer Park and nearby residential neighborhoods.

The project is targeting substantial completion in December 2025.

The Bevelhymer/Walnut Roundabout and Fieldhouse Project represents a strategic investment in New Albany’s infrastructure, safety, and recreation amenities. Stay tuned for more updates as construction progresses.

Detour Information

Routes will be in place from September 2 through December

As we move forward with this project, a new traffic pattern is required to accommodate the work. A detour route is now published and will guide you around the construction site during the closure, beginning on September 2. To view the official detour maps, please visit our detours page.
