Community Backyards

Community Backyards is an annual program administered by Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District that promotes water quality education for residents in Franklin County, Ohio. Their goal is to protect water quality by reducing stormwater runoff at home. They encourage and incentivize the use of rain barrels, rain gardens, native plants, composting, and low-input lawn care to keep your waterways healthy.

Invasive Species Trade-In

The City of New Albany is enhancing its Invasive Species Trade-In Program with the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District by offering an even bigger incentive to participate. Residents of the City of New Albany can now receive up to $500 for removing an invasive tree/shrub and replacing it with a new native tree/shrub!

Sustainability Advisory Board

The New Albany Sustainability Advisory Board was created in June 2021 by New Albany City Council as a direct result of recommendations included in the 2020 Engage New Albany Strategic Plan. The Sustainability Advisory Board was established to advise City Council on matters relating to sustainability, promote and communicate sustainability principles broadly among the community, and advise and assist City Council and the City Manager in efforts to make City operations more sustainable.

The Board met for the first time in November 2021 and has since been working hard to accomplish these duties. This work plan highlights the accomplishments and progress towards the Board’s 2025 priorities and outlines their goals for 2026.

Green Guardians

The New Albany Sustainability Advisory Board and New Albany City Council have expanded the city-wide composting program by collecting food waste and having food waste stations at our community events. To make this successful, the City of New Albany has recruited individuals at community events to serve as Green Guardians and volunteer at the waste station to ensure compost, recycling and trash go in the correct receptacles.

E-Waste, Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off

She is smiling and wearing a long-sleeved shirt. In the background, there are pallets and more large bins covered with black plastic bags, with a large building and parked vehicles visible.

Bike Share Program

The City of New Albany is expanding its bike share program to encourage more people to explore the community on bicycle.

Launching a bike share program is just one way that we can make our community even more bicycle friendly. A program like this also supports two of New Albany’s four pillars – health & wellness and environmental sustainability. Initially launched in 2021 with ten bicycles thanks to a sponsorship from Dream Industrial, the program now includes 26 bicycles available for shared use to individuals on a short-term basis. This allows each bike to serve several users per day.

The City’s initial goal with this bike share program is to help the employees of our business park venture into town to experience New Albany like a local. With those employees in mind, we are placing the bike stations near the southwest corner of New Albany-Condit Road and Walton Parkway, Rose Run Park, Taylor Farm Park, and the Forest Drive Park and Ride.
