About the Project

To ease congestion in the heart of town and prepare for future growth, the City of New Albany has worked to complete the extension of Market Street northeast of the Village Center, creating a new connection to Dublin-Granville Road and US-62.

As travelers head east on Market Street from the Village Center, the former dead end at Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road has been transformed into a roundabout. From there, the new Market Street extension continues northeast to Dublin-Granville Road. Third Street, between Dublin-Granville Road and US-62, has also been reconstructed, providing a seamless flow of traffic from the Market Street extension to US-62.

This new roadway network is designed to relieve traffic congestion in the Village Center while accommodating future increases in traffic volume.

A key feature of the project is the scenic overlook, made possible through collaboration between the City and The New Albany Company. Visitors can now enjoy views of a new water feature and wetland plantings, enhancing the natural character of the area.

Construction began in late fall 2024 and is now substantially complete, marking a significant milestone in the City’s ongoing efforts to improve mobility, connectivity, and quality of place.

Latest News

  • We are excited to announce that the Market Street Extension project is now fully open to traffic!
    • US-62 has reopened to traffic between Second Street and Third Street, restoring direct access to SR-605 and the Village Center.

As part of the project, new traffic signals have been installed at the reconstructed intersection of Third Street and US-62. The new signals will flash as required by law until January 6 when they will begin to function in a typical red-yellow-green operation.

    • During this temporary signal flashing period, northbound and southbound traffic will get a yellow flash indicating they can proceed through the intersection, while eastbound traffic will have a red flash indicating they need to stop and yield to the northbound/southbound traffic. (Please see map below.) During this time, left turns for eastbound traffic will be prohibited, and motorists should continue to use the signed detour for Main Street.

    • Any remaining restoration work and landscaping is planned for this upcoming spring.
  • There is a new traffic pattern at the intersection of Third Street and Dublin-Granville Road. If approaching the intersection from Third Street or the new Market Street Extension, you have the right of way and can continue through the intersection without stopping. If approaching the intersection from Dublin-Granville Road, you must stop and wait for cross traffic to clear to proceed on your way. As always, use caution in construction zones and keep an eye out for pedestrians.

    • The bridge over Rose Run has been installed. Aesthetic features such as brick veneer are nearing completion.
    • All curb and paving work has been completed.

Description of Work

Parts 1-3

Part 1 involved constructing a roundabout at Market Street and Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road, requiring utility work from mid-February 2025 to the end of that school year.

Part 2 of the project, between SR-605 and Dublin-Granville Road, began fall 2024 and was completed in fall 2025.

Part 3 focused on reconfiguring the Main Street and Third Street intersection to prioritize Third Street as the primary route to US-62, with minor construction beginning in February 2025, including new parking spaces, curbing, and a shared-use path. More significant work on US-62 was completed in late fall 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where will the extension be built?

As you travel east on Market Street leaving the Village Center, what is currently a dead end at Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road will become a roundabout. We plan to extend Market Street northeast from that future roundabout to connect with Dublin-Granville Road. and US-62 via Third Street. Click here for a PDF of the map above.

Why is the project necessary?

Our goal with this project is relieve traffic congestion within the Village Center and to accommodate future increases in traffic volume as the region continues to develop.

The most significant source of traffic congestion in the Village Center is the intersection of Main Street and High Street, but the buildings surrounding this intersection prevent us from being able to widen the roads or add lanes. By extending Market Street, we expect to re-direct about 20% of drivers away from Main Street and High Street and provide a non-stop travel path around the heart of the village center.  The Market Street extension will provide more convenient access to and from State Route 161 along Main Street.

How will Third Street be affected by the project?

The project includes reconfiguring the intersection of Main Street and Third Street in a way that Third Street will become the more prominent travel path to and from US-62.

Will there be any retail or housing options along this extension?

The City of New Albany does not have any current applications for development, but the project will set up the area for future growth.

How much land was acquired for the project?

Road right of way in the amount of 3.23 acres was needed to support this project. The needed right of way was dedicated to the City of New Albany at no cost by the property owners.

How much will the project cost?

We estimate the total cost of the project will be close to $14 million. The City received funding support from the Ohio Public Works Commission in the form of a $244,000 grant and $756,000 loan for the project. The remaining project cost will be funded from the City’s capital improvement fund.

What is the timeline for the project?

Construction began in late fall 2024 and is expected to last roughly 18-24 months. Work on the project will be performed in a manner to limit traffic impacts as much as possible.

How can I stay updated?

You can stay updated with the project by following the City of New Albany’s social media accounts and by subscribing to our weekly Connects email at newalbanyohio.org/subscribe. We will also include updates on this page and in future City Council mailed letters to residents.
