Upcoming Roundabout Project at Walnut Street and SR-605 Scheduled for 2026

Project Not Expected to Interfere with Bevelhymer & Walnut Roundabout Project

The Franklin County Engineer’s Office, in partnership with the City of New Albany, ODOT, and Plain Township, plans to improve traffic flow and safety by constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Walnut Street and New Albany-Condit Road (SR-605). This $5 million project will remove the current offset intersection and replace it with a 2×1 multi-lane elliptical roundabout, designed to better accommodate current and future traffic volumes while enhancing connectivity for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. See image below.

In addition to the roundabout, the project will upgrade 0.25 miles of SR 605 and 0.19 miles of Walnut Street, and include the installation of a closed storm sewer system, new street lighting, sidewalks, a shared-use path, and improved bike lane connections. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2026 and may include a full road closure for approximately 60 days, with signed detours in place.

To minimize traffic impacts, the City of New Albany is coordinating its nearby Bevelhymer Road/Walnut Street roundabout project to be completed in 2025—prior to the start of this county-led project in 2026.
