Pelotonia Returns to New Albany Aug. 1-2: What Residents Need to Know

Welcome to Pelotonia Ride Weekend

Thousands of cyclists will travel through New Albany during Pelotonia Ride Weekend on Saturday, Aug. 1, and Sunday, Aug. 2, bringing increased traffic and intermittent travel delays throughout the community.

The City of New Albany is working closely with Pelotonia organizers and public safety agencies to help ensure the event is safe for riders, volunteers, spectators, and residents. While access to homes and businesses will be maintained, motorists should expect rolling closures and delays along portions of the route and are encouraged to plan ahead.

Pelotonia is a grassroots movement dedicated to accelerating innovative cancer research. Since its founding in 2009, the organization has raised more than $339 million, with 100% of participant-raised funds supporting innovative cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – The James.

What to Expect

This year’s Ride Weekend includes several routes that begin, end or travel through New Albany, including:

  • 23-mile route from Downtown Columbus to New Albany
  • 46-mile route from Downtown Columbus to Abercrombie & Fitch Co. in New Albany
  • 66-mile route from New Albany Schools to Kenyon College
  • 27-mile New Albany Loop on Sunday
  • 131-mile and 165-mile two-day rides that return to New Albany on Sunday

Traffic Impacts

Residents should expect rolling traffic closures and intermittent traffic delays throughout the weekend as riders travel through the community. Police officers and trained traffic personnel will manage key intersections to safely move riders while allowing vehicle traffic to pass whenever possible.

Travel times may be longer than normal, particularly near:

  • New Albany Schools
  • State Route 605
  • Dublin-Granville Road
  • Central College Road
  • New Albany Links and surrounding neighborhoods
  • Abercrombie & Fitch Co. campus

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, follow posted detours and directions from law enforcement, and use alternate routes whenever practical.

Access for Residents

Emergency vehicles will maintain access throughout Ride Weekend. Police officers and event staff will work to minimize delays for residents traveling to and from neighborhoods while prioritizing the safety of cyclists and motorists.

Residents living along the route may experience brief delays while riders pass. If you have time-sensitive travel plans, consider leaving before peak riding periods or using alternate routes.

What Residents Can Do

  • Plan Ahead: If you need to travel during the event, especially on Saturday, August 2, please allow for extra time and familiarize yourself with alternative routes.
  • Safety First: When driving near the race route, be extra vigilant for cyclists. Maintain a safe distance and be prepared for unexpected stops. Remember, riders will have rolling support, law enforcement assistance, and SAG (Support and Gear) vehicles along the route.
  • Cheer on the Riders! Show your support for the Pelotonia riders! Find a safe spot along the route to cheer them on as they pedal for a cure. Their efforts directly impact life-saving cancer research, with over $339 million raised so far for The OSUCCC-James.
  • Stay Informed: For immediate concerns, the Pelotonia Command Center can be reached at 1-855-889-RIDE (call and text capabilities).

Thank You for Your Cooperation!

The City of New Albany extends a heartfelt thank you to all our residents for your cooperation and understanding during the Pelotonia event. Your support helps create a safe and successful experience for the riders and contributes to the vital mission of ending cancer.
