Police Chief Greg Jones will retire from the New Albany Police Department in November after 37 years of dedicated service to the community.

When Chief Jones joined the department as a patrol officer in 1989, New Albany covered just one square mile and was home to 918 residents. Today, the city has grown to more than 11,000 residents.

“It’s been 37 years with the department, and it’s time to pass the torch to a new chief. I really appreciate all of the support the community and the City have provided me and our team, and I’m grateful for our outstanding staff. The department will be in good hands moving forward,” Chief Jones said.

Under Chief Jones’ leadership, the New Albany Police Department earned accreditation in 2019 and reaccreditation in 2023 from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), certifying that the department has established best practices that meet a national standard of excellence. Achieving accreditation was a three-year process that required the department to meet more than 180 policing standards.

During Chief Jones’ tenure, the department expanded to more than 55 police officers, dispatchers and professional staff to meet the needs of a growing community. Chief Jones is most proud of the outstanding people within the department, whose commitment to building strong relationships with residents and businesses reflects the department’s dedication to serving the community.
