Juneteenth National Freedom Day

June 19, 2022

At their June 7 meeting, New Albany City Council recognized June 19 as Juneteenth National Freedom Day in New Albany to encourage members of our community to reflect on their freedoms, appreciate the history of struggle against slavery that led to liberation, and acknowledge the perseverance of African Americans against racism and inequality.

Dating back to June 19, 1865, Juneteenth (a combination of the words “June” and “nineteenth”) is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. Click here to learn more from the National Museum of African American History & Culture.

There are several Juneteenth celebrations scheduled across Central Ohio. Click here to see a list of events.
