NEW ALBANY POLICE CHIEF AND MAYOR SHARE UPDATES FOLLOWING SHOOTING

NEW ALBANY, OHIO – New Albany Police Department (NAPD) Chief Greg Jones and City of New Albany Mayor Sloan Spalding shared updates at a press conference following last evening’s deadly shooting.

“The test of a community is not whether tragedy strikes,” Spalding said. “The real test is how the people of the community respond to that tragedy, and New Albany rose to the challenge.”

NAPD Officers were on scene within 4 minutes of the 911 call. According to Chief Jones, the suspect fled, and the handgun was recovered at the scene. With the help of U.S. Marshalls and ATF, New Albany Police officers found and apprehended the suspect within 12 hours. He resisted and officers had to use non-lethal force to arrest him.

“We’re grateful for the local, state, and federal agencies that jumped in to help us quickly and effectively arrest the suspect,” Jones said. As of now, one person died and five were injured and transferred to local area hospitals. Chief Jones also shared that NAPD Officers will have full access to psychologists, peerto-peer groups, and Employee Assistance Programs should they need them.

“Our hearts are heavy for the family who lost a loved one, and we’re praying for those injured,” Jones continued. “Because this is an active, on-going investigation, we can’t share everything at this time. We will share updates with the media and the community of New Albany as we have new, verifiable information.”
