New Albany Selects Brian Spoon as Next Chief of Police

The city of New Albany has selected Brian Spoon as the next chief of police for the New Albany Police Department. Spoon currently serves as assistant chief for the Westerville Division of Police.

Spoon brings nearly three decades of law enforcement experience, including more than 20 years with the Westerville Division of Police. He was promoted to assistant chief in 2022 and has served in a range of operational and leadership roles, with experience in policy and professional standards, leadership development, training, protocol, and community engagement.

“Effective policing starts with earning and maintaining public trust,” Spoon said. “My leadership philosophy emphasizes clear communication and principled, reasonable decision-making grounded in policy and law. I believe in building collaborative relationships with the community and city leaders, and in creating an organizational culture that values excellence, teamwork, accountability, innovation, and professional service.”

New Albany Mayor Sloan Spalding said he is confident Spoon will uphold the New Albany Police Department’s high standards and build on its commitment to protecting the community and earning public trust.

“We look forward to welcoming Brian Spoon to New Albany. Our community’s safety and welcoming character are made possible, in large part, by the dedicated members of the New Albany Police Department,” Mayor Spalding said. “Their work reflects a clear mission: preventing crime and protecting life and property while serving residents, businesses, and visitors with professionalism, integrity, respect, and compassion. We are confident Brian will build on that strong foundation and continue the department’s tradition of exceptional service.”

Spoon earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton and a master’s degree in public safety from the University of Virginia. He began his law enforcement career with the Ontario Police Department in Richland County, Ohio, in 1998, and joined the Westerville Division of Police in 2002.

The city is finalizing details and anticipates that Spoon will join the department in early December. He succeeds Chief Greg Jones, who is retiring after 37 years of service to New Albany.
