Stay Prepared: Severe Weather Awareness Week 2026 in Franklin County

March 15–21, 2026, is Ohio’s Severe Weather Awareness Week, a crucial time to prepare for severe storms, tornadoes, and other hazardous weather conditions. Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security (FCEM&HS) urges residents to take proactive steps to stay safe before severe weather strikes. Dangerous conditions can arise unexpectedly, making preparedness essential.

“Severe Weather Awareness Week reminds us that preparedness saves. Taking the time now to understand the weather terms, make a plan, and ensure you have reliable ways to receive emergency alerts can make all the difference. Although we can’t control the weather, we can control how ready we are,” said Jeffrey J. Young, Director of Franklin County Emergency Management & Homeland Security.

Statewide Tornado Drill – Wednesday, March 18, at 9:50 A.M.

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, Ohio will conduct a Statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 9:50 a.m. At that time, Franklin County’s Outdoor Warning Sirens will sound for three minutes. The tone will match an actual tornado warning to help residents, businesses, and schools practice emergency preparedness.

How Do Franklin County’s Outdoor Warning Sirens Work?

FCEM&HS activates the sirens only when the National Weather Service (NWS) issues a Tornado Warning for Franklin County. Sirens will sound for three minutes, followed by seven minutes of silence, repeating until the warning is lifted. The system operates by zones, aligning with NWS alerts for greater accuracy.

Severe Weather Preparedness Tips

FCEM&HS encourages residents to follow these safety steps:

  • Know the Risks – Understand common weather hazards in Franklin County. Find resources at FCEM&HS’s website.
  • Learn Weather Terms – A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes, while a Tornado Warning means a tornado has been detected.
  • Stay Informed – Sign up for New Albany Alerts from the City of New Albany here or ALERT Franklin County here. Keep a NOAA Weather Radio and stay tuned to local news.
  • Make a Plan & Build a Kit – Create and practice an emergency plan with your family and pets. Stock an emergency supply kit with enough food, water, and essentials for at least 72 hours.
