Back-to-School Safety: A Community Guide for Drivers, Walkers & Bikers

A new school year is here! As students return to walking, biking, and riding the bus, it’s a great time for our entire community to work together to ensure our roads are safe for everyone during this back-to-school season.

Tips for Safe Travels

Whether you’re behind the wheel, on a bike, or on foot, following these simple tips will help keep our students safe.

For Drivers

  • Slow Down and Stay Alert. Be extra cautious in school zones, residential areas, and near parks.
  • Give Buses Space. Always stop when a school bus has its stop sign extended and its lights flashing. The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children, so keeping a safe distance is critical.
  • Respect Crosswalks. Stop well before the crosswalk to give pedestrians room to cross safely. Avoid blocking crosswalks, even when waiting at a red light.
  • Follow School Procedures. Be sure to follow the specific drop-off and pick-up procedures for each school building.

For Walkers and Bikers

  • Be Seen. Wear bright clothing or use reflective gear, especially during the morning and evening hours when visibility is lower.
  • Use Crosswalks. Always use marked crosswalks and intersections. Wait for the walk signal and make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before you cross.
  • Stay Focused. Put away phones and other devices. Pay attention to your surroundings, traffic signals, and other people on the road.
  • Bikes & Scooters: Always wear a helmet. Bicycles, eBikes, and scooters are not permitted on turf surfaces on the school campus and double riding is prohibited there. Please be mindful of pedestrians and maintain a speed of 5 mph on sidewalks.

For Bus Riders

  • Arrive on Time. Be at your bus stop at least five minutes early.
  • Bus Rules Apply. Remember that school rules and behavioral expectations are in effect while on the bus.
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings. While waiting, be respectful of neighbors and stay out of driveways.
  • Use Safe Behavior. Avoid running in or near the street or driveways.
  • Proceed to a Safe Spot. In accordance with Ohio law, students must go directly to a designated “place of safety” upon pickup and drop-off and remain there until the bus departs. Your bus driver will point out this safe spot.

By working together, we can ensure our students have a safe and successful trip to and from school every single day. Let’s make it a great year!
