New Albany City Council Approves New Electric Bike and Powered Scooter Safety Laws

New E-Bike & Powered Scooter Safety Laws

New Albany City Council has approved new legislation to enhance community safety and clarify the rules of the road for e-bikes and powered scooters. These changes are designed to promote responsible use while protecting pedestrians, cyclists, and riders themselves. Key updates include:

  • Helmets required for riders under 18
  • Speed limit of 10 mph on shared-use paths (motors not allowed on sidewalks) unless otherwise posted
  • Lights/reflectors required at night
  • Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16, wear a helmet, and use the road
  • Parents may be cited if their child violates the rules

E-dirt bikes are not street legal and are not permitted on shared-use paths, sidewalks, or city streets.
