Officer Kelly Represents New Albany on Global Stage

From November 14-16, 2024, New Albany Police Officer Leland Kelly represented our community on a global stage at the International Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics conference in San Antonio, Texas. This incredible event brought together over 1,200 law enforcement officers from around the world to champion acceptance and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Officer Kelly was specially chosen by Special Olympics Ohio to serve as part of the prestigious Guardian of the Flame detail, escorting the Flame of Hope during ceremonies and general sessions. This honor placed him among fewer than 40 officers worldwide in this elite role! His team included representatives from the Nye County Sheriff’s Office (Las Vegas area), Taiwan, and Canada, showcasing the power of global collaboration.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run movement symbolizes courage, diversity, and community, with more than 100,000 law enforcement members carrying the Flame of Hope annually to inspire inclusion and celebrate the achievements of Special Olympics athletes. Since 1981, LETR has raised over $1 billion for local Special Olympics programs, making a lasting impact.
