Roundabout Project at Walnut Street and SR-605 Set to Reopen June 2

The Franklin County Engineer’s Office, in partnership with the City of New Albany, ODOT, and Plain Township, is constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Walnut Street and New Albany-Condit Road (SR-605) to improve traffic flow and safety. This $5 million project will remove the current offset intersection and replace it with a multi-lane elliptical roundabout designed to better handle current and future traffic while improving connections for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

In addition to the roundabout, the project will upgrade about 0.25 miles of SR-605 and 0.19 miles of Walnut Street, and include new storm sewers, street lighting, sidewalks, a shared-use path, and improved bike lanes.

Construction & Road Closure

The intersection of Walnut Street and SR-605 will be fully closed during the project with an expected reopening around June 2, 2026, weather permitting.

Detours

During construction, signed detours will guide traffic around the closure:

  • Westbound Walnut Street: South on Johnstown Road (US-62) → west on Central College Road → north on Harlem Road to Walnut Street.
  • Eastbound Walnut Street: Follow the detour in the opposite direction.
  • Northbound SR-605: West on Central College Road → north on Harlem Road → east on Fancher Road to SR-605.
  • Southbound SR-605: Follow the detour in the opposite direction.

Residents should expect extra traffic along Central College Road and in nearby neighborhoods, including Nottingham Trace, especially from trucks using the detour.
